When Taika Waititi directed the grand finale of Star Wars: The Mandalorian, we knew how he’s an apt choice to take us to the ‘galaxy far far away’. Back in January, there was news of the Thor: Ragnarok director developing a script for the next Star Wars movie but then nothing official came out.
But, finally, Disney and Lucasfilm officially unveiled that Taika Waititi is indeed helming the next Star Wars movie. Not just Taikia, the studio also welcomed his co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns who also penned last year’s critically acclaimed Sam Mendes’ war-drama 1917.
News of an untitled Star Wars TV series has also been confirmed by the studio. Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland will be helming the series. After a quirky take on Superhero templates with Thor: Ragnarok, Taika surely impressed Star Wars fans with his approach towards this dystopian era worshipped by moviegoers.

So, the studio has announced 3 Star Wars films to be released in 2022, 2024 and 2026. Is Taika Waititi directing one of them or his is a separate one? We’ll have to wait for a while to know about the same.
Back in February, when Variety got in touch with Taika on helming the next Star Wars film, he was pretty diplomatic with his answer. He had said, “Are there discussions about the ‘Star Wars’ film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was. I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with ‘Star Wars,’ and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”
